Infrastructure and community projects set to transform the region |
The long-anticipated upgrade of the N4 carriageway between Mullingar and Longford has taken a significant leap forward with its inclusion in the Government's updated National Development Plan.
On Wednesday, the Cabinet approved the project's addition to the €22 billion transport investment programme, marking a pivotal moment for regional infrastructure.
The 52-kilometer stretch, currently a single carriageway handling over 17,500 vehicles daily, has faced numerous funding setbacks over the years.
In March, the Department of Transport allocated €2.5 million to advance the project, following the identification of a preferred route.
Minister for Enterprise, Tourism, and Employment, Peter Burke TD, emphasized the project's importance, stating, "This road has been an accident hotspot for too long. With more than 900 junctions and an outdated layout, it poses real risks for local families, commuters, and businesses every single day. The upgrade is essential not just for economic development, but for public safety."
Beyond the N4 upgrade, Mullingar is witnessing a surge in development projects that promise to reshape the town's landscape.
In July 2025, Westmeath County Council proposed the construction of the Mullingar Regional Sports Complex at Blackhall Place.
The envisioned 9,246 sqm, multi-sport facility will feature an eight-lane 25m swimming pool, a teaching pool, a 12-court sports hall, a gym, and various community spaces.
External enhancements include landscaped public plazas, pedestrian and cycle routes, and upgraded road infrastructure.
In the residential sector, Andrews Construction Limited received approval in June 2025 to build 245 houses on the Dublin Road at Petitswood.
The development comprises a mix of four-bed and three-bed homes, duplexes, and apartments, complete with a childcare facility, extensive parking, and open green spaces.
Additionally, Glenveagh Homes is progressing with Greville Park, a new community in Mullingar offering A-rated two and three-bedroom homes.
As of December 2025, the first 154 homeowners have moved in, with the remaining residents expected by early 2026.
These developments collectively signify a transformative period for Mullingar, enhancing its infrastructure, housing, and community facilities.
As these projects unfold, they are set to bolster the town's appeal, safety, and economic vitality, positioning Mullingar as a thriving hub in the Midlands. |
